IRS & State Identity Verification

In an effort to protect themselves from issuing falsely claimed refunds, the IRS and some states are sending snail mail letters to taxpayers and requesting that W2 and/or 1099 forms be sent to them to verify numbers that have been reported on the taxpayer’s tax return.  If you receive one of these letters feel free to send it to us at d.a.g.i. to confirm it is legitimate before you respond, or go ahead and comply with the letter if you are comfortable.

The IRS letter will normally show you the amount of your federal withholding from your tax return so you can trust that it is actually the IRS inquiring.  Virginia normally sends a two-page letter which includes spaces for you to write back to them and they also request copies of your W2s and 1099s.  Both the IRS and Virginia offer a mailing address and also a fax number where you can send your response to, whichever is easiest.

If you have any questions or need assistance please feel free to contact our office and we will be happy to be of assistance to you.
